Granbego

Bed and breakfast nella natura a Sassello!

ENGLISH

Gran Bego, the Ligurian god of mountains and metals_News from a distant past.

Certainly the most ancient and independent people of the Mediterranean, the Ligurians are referred to in many ancient legends as one of the most important ethnicities of the West.
The most distant ethnic-religious tradition of Liguria is the worship of the god Bego.
The god Bego was the personification of the occult powers of nature and the protective god of the life of the whole community.
In the ancient Breton language (from which the term derives) beg means tip, summit; Begou', plural, tips, summits, hence the name given to the current Monte Beigua (Mount Summit) -- an ancient prehistoric sanctuary, a point of attraction for the people of a vast Apennine area that included the current Ligurian mountain range, part of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, and part of Lombardy, Piedmont and France (perhaps up to the most western foothills of the Iberian Peninsula).

To all the archaic peoples the mountain represented a symbol of power as well as height.
The logo of our site (Fig. 1) is taken from an engraving found among the thousands present at Monte Bego, the other most ancient sanctuary of Liguria (in the valley of Meraviglie, above Ventimiglia).
Monte Bego: the kingdom of local metals, mountain of faith and fear, the paradise of vipers.
According to a strong popular belief, it was here that God or a god was born: the god Gran Bego.
The engraving found on the rock represents the figure known as "the worshipper".
In almost all the traditions the position of the individual with his arms raised to the sky symbolises the realisation of the most universal desire of man: the conquest of immortality. Sometimes such a symbol can represent the divinity itself, its personification (Gran Bego, in fact).

In the most archaic traditions, the meaning of the figure of the worshipper (Fig. 1) appears to be undeniably mystic: a human being standing with arms raised and tools in hand (daggers, working tools) not begging favour, but demanding it. Thus the individual is identified morphologically with the axis mundi: his feet touching the ground, his arms raised invoke the powers and strength of heaven, and he turns into the mediator of contradictions.

But an important distinction is to be made: the difference in the meanings of the hieroglyphs that represent the sitting individual with arms raised, and those that depict him standing. Sitting implies a passive and receptive position; standing, on the contrary, an active and creative attitude.
The two positions refer to the distinction between the religious forma mentis (mindset) (passive, receptive, begging the favour of the gods) and the mystic mindset (active, creative, which is identified with the deity and
demands divine attributes).
It should be added that the worshipper, who demands or has powers like those involved in a ritual, is often represented individually, while the one who begs favour takes part, along with other worshipers, in a religious ceremony (Fig. 2), and so he is represented in a group: only the latter case, in truth, answers to the denomination of worshipper. In the former case, however, we are in the presence of a mystic.

If, as a rule, the worshipper is almost always a manifestation of the sacred (hierophany), and also an assembly, a community that gathers, a community aggregated to carry out a ritual, sometimes the worshipper can be the god himself (theophany), manifested or embodied in a single individual.
In the worshipper one can recognise a theophany when he is associated with some characteristics which endows him with omnipotence, such as ithyphalliscim (the erect penis), or proximity/association with an allegorical animal (deer, bull), or the association with a weapon (an ax or another tool).
